Somerset Stragglers entertained Arden Taverners at Ashbrittle CC on the last leg of their annual tour to North Devon. Batting first under clear skies and the hot sun opener Solly Woodall accumulated nicely with 63 from 82 balls and he was well supported by Anburaj Alexander (24), Mark White (17) and Max O'Farrell (21) in the middle order. However, it was left to Sam Burgess to take full toll on a weary Taverners attack as he plundered 74 not out from just 40 balls with twelve fours and a six as Stragglers reached 247/6 from the allotted 40 overs.
In reply, the Taverners innings was overshadowed by a brilliant all round display from Woodall as he returned figures of 6-18 with the new ball from just 6 overs. Only Joel Brett (25), Ben Kilford (44) and number ten James Bowker (23 not out) provided any resistance of note as the Taverners innings was punctuated by the steady fall of wickets, at one point being 46-5 and then 94-8, before Taverners were all out for 153 in exactly 30 overs.
Many thanks to hosts Ashbrittle CC for an idyllic setting and to Jon and Janet Dawes for wonderful teas. Whilst the Taverners headed home, many of the Stragglers team visited the nearby Globe Inn for extra refreshments.
